How To Demonstrate Meeting Engagement: Video Conferencing Edition

Our guidance on showing you’re engaged during video meetings

Video-conferencing has become so common that for many of us, when we hear the word “meeting,” we think of our video software rather than a conference room. At the beginning of the pandemic when we made a sudden shift to virtual meetings, we were much more careful about our appearance and behavior. Everyone arrived prepared and five minutes early, unfamiliar with the software, unsure how it worked, and unaccustomed to being on camera.

Like with anything we grow used to, we tend to relax over time. It’s similar to buying a new car - at first, we drive carefully and keep it spotless, but gradually the care we give it fades away. The shiny interior and the new car smell turns into fast food wrappers, and regular car washes become less frequent. The car is no longer “new” and to be babied, but simply “our car.” This guidance then, is both a list of recommendations for your video meetings, and an opportunity to reset your behavior; to get that new car feeling back!
