So I had about 3 interviews with this company and thats not counting the phone screens but they contacted me back after the final interview and said that they would like to run my background check and check references. I gave them my info and a week or so after talking to the recruiter I hear from the background check company to send them my authorization form and1 I sent it to them. A week goes by and I emailed the recruiter last Monday(6-13) and said I havent heard anything and wanted to see if they needed anything else. He said they are still in the background check process and it should be completed by the end of the week the end of the week. I didnt hear anything today and I am anxious to know something. It is a pretty large company but I never knew a background would take this long before they could make a decision. Should I give up waiting or does this sound normal? |

sounds normal to me
When you're on the waiting end, it's easy to interpret any lengthy delay as a rejection. I felt the same way when going through the process just over a year ago. I was contacted by a recruiter, sent in all the requested information, did a personality profile, then waited. After a while I was contacted for a phone interview, which I thought went well, then I waited again. About 2 - 3 weeks later I was invited for a live interview, which was scheduled for almost 2 weeks out. After that I waited again. I did get the job - almost 2 months after the phone interview. We never know what is happening on the other end. Things happen in businesses, people get busy, and sometimes filling the position takes a back seat to something more urgent.
Best of luck to you!
Sounds normal - nothing to worry about
Most situations I've been through only go to a background check just prior to making an offer or after one has been accepted. My experience makes for an admittedly small sample, but getting to that stage is probably a good sign.
Nothing you can do will speed things along for the better. Big companies often have compensation reviews prior to making an offer, or maybe the total cost (salary, benefits, signing bonus, relocation, etc) has to go to a leadership team for approval. Maybe the approval person just went on leave. Maybe there's an internal change and they have to consider internal candidates. No way to tell.
One thing you can do is run a cheap criminal background check on yourself through your state police. That may provide assurance that there's nothing out there to worry about. I did one online a while ago and I think it cost about $10 and I got an immediate result (thankfully all clear!)
