The real problem with transition lenses is that the reaction appears to suffer as the heat of the lens increases. In the heat of the sun you will get no protection at all.

Slightly off-topic, but funny story: I used to work in an office where one of the people was always wearing his sunglasses in summer, even in the office. He suddenly stopped when somebody anonymous put an article from Scientific American on the notice board with details of a scientific study showing that people that wear sunglasses in house are trying to hide something...
